White Smoke is easy, but how do you make it black without burning rubber tires? Creatively, Ladder 49 Special Effects Technician Larry Fioritto, worked with camera technicians to create lots of smoke on film in a miniature 36’ tall set. “It wasn’t a small challenge or a small set. It was a real thought process. The camera techs reversed the film into negative, making the white smoke appear black, then filled in color where needed. It worked well and tells the story,” He said.
